Another peaceful Memorial Day except for the loud motorcycles. Before you ride, please check your mufflers and always observe the noise regulations. You should never exceed 55 decibels above ambient noise. Happy Memorial Day and Thank You.
|
|
Michael Hill says:
Dear Sir; Per your own post the noise limit is 55 decibels ABOVE AMBIENT NOISE LEVELS. Therefore you must first recognize what “Ambient Noise Level” is. On average in a Metro are like Arlington or D.C. metro ambient noise level is approximately 60-70 decibels. Therefore 55 above that would then translate to 115-125 decibels. With a stock Harley Exhaust being 80 decibels on average even a modified exhaust would be under the 115 decibels you say are the limit. So while I appreciate your circumstance and your suffering we do remain within the limits. I recommend that you consider downloading an app that displays the decibels using your phones microphone. There are several free apps. This way you can record ambient noise levels at different times of the day, and it will be handy next year to check our levels as we process out.

Are you serious? This is what you took away from this amazing organization that does incredible work in our communities? Perhaps you'd really prefer this weekend's protest ride to have been called Rolling Whisper to make the point about the treatment of unaccounted POW/MIAs? Find bigger fish to fry pal, and lighten up. Life is too short.

The Gremlin says:
Sir, I believe we should discuss your misinterpretation of the health and safety aspect of motorcycle exhaust noises. Being that every 3 decibels of increase translates to a perceived doubling of the intensity of sound, I agree that this is an important topic and am happy to clarify further. 55 decibels ABOVE ambient is an important distinction but then so is a phrase you missed that is “unprotected.” According to the Academy of Sound Science, sound protection refers to “any sound filtering device that lowers the perceived decibel level at the source or receiver.” Luckily for you, your walls would count. When we ride by if you simply go inside your home, then you will be protected. There, problem solved. All you have to do is go inside and everything is fine. Thank you to the fine scientists at A.S.S. for their hard work and study of this topic.

Slider says:
So if Harley Davidson states that a stock exhaust emits 80 decibels how would you suggest we reduce the exhaust sound to your preferred 55?
Posted on: 2023-05-28 20:44:18
Pete says:
Kevin Q, Thanks for your reply. This is what Harley=Davidson says: "Straight off the line today, Harley exhaust systems can emit noise as high as 80 decibels (dBs), give or take depending on the model." That's 25 decibels above the limit of 55 decibles. If you remember your High School math, decibels are calculated with a logarithmic function. So 25 decibels equates to over 17 times the allowed limit on a linear scale. Are you sure your sound meter is calibrated correctly? Thanks for having this discussion and thank you for your service to our great nation. Pete

Kevin Q says:
Our decibelometers that we carry with us wherever we go were not calibrated correctly. After reading your post we double checked and found that they were one decibel off. So when they read 55 decibels it was actually 56 decibels. We have rectified this problem and we will no longer be ruining anyone’s weekends. We apologize profusely.

It is with great sadness that I report the loss of our Brother Dave "GPS" Sannes. Dave passed last Thursday after 3 weeks in ICU due to a MC crash while out for one of his daily rides. He collided with a UPS truck. Our Chapter is heading to Richmond VA next Wednesday to escort him home for the funeral service. Services will be the 18th of March at 1500 in Rocky Mount, NC.

Greetings,
I just wanted to throw a shout-out and say that I have enjoyed reading your web site and seeing all of the great things you guys do. I had the pleasure of riding with one of your members over the weekend. He was a stellar gentleman whose company I enjoyed immensely. He told me all about your club as well as clued me in to some protocols about clubs in general that, as a frequent rider, are always good to know. I think your message and mission is clear and your follow-through is top notch. Please be safe out there!
